About the Department of Basic Sciences & Humanities (BSH)

Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology (MSIT)

Established in 2001, the Department of Basic Sciences & Humanities (BSH) at MSIT offers a robust academic foundation for all B. Tech first-year students, regardless of their engineering discipline. The department aims to equip students with essential scientific knowledge, mathematical proficiency, and strong communication skills, ensuring a smooth transition into their core engineering studies.

BSH integrates five key domains to strengthen students’ foundational knowledge:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • English Language and Communication

The department’s strength lies in its highly qualified and experienced faculty, with all members holding or pursuing doctoral degrees, including two with post-doctoral experience. Faculty members are actively involved in research, publishing in international journals, holding patents, and contributing to textbooks. Some are principal investigators in government-sponsored projects and serve as reviewers for prestigious publishers such as Springer.

The department is equipped with ICT-enabled classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and a dedicated Language Laboratory. These facilities provide an interactive and engaging learning experience with real-world applications. Additionally, first-year students also undergo employability enhancement training in aptitude and soft skills, preparing them for professional challenges.

At BSH, holistic development extends beyond academics. The induction program, BODHIKA, exposes students to renowned academicians, industry professionals, and notable alumni. The program also includes sessions on Universal Human Values. The department encourages students to participate in innovation competitions such as the Smart India Hackathon and Bengalathon, where 1st year teams, under faculty mentorship, have earned awards and accolades.

The department celebrates National Science Day annually with seminars and project competitions, recognizing academic achievers. Pandora’s Box, the department’s wall magazine, showcases students’ literary talents. BSH also supports a vibrant campus life with diverse activities—cultural, sports, technical, and social—encouraging first-year students to explore their interests.

The Department of Basic Sciences & Humanities is committed to developing not only knowledgeable engineers but also well-rounded individuals with critical thinking, creativity, and strong ethical values.

We invite you to join us on a journey of academic excellence and personal growth.
