The North Eastern Region (NER) UGC Scholarship is a special initiative by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the “Ishan Uday” Special Scholarship Scheme to support students from the North Eastern Region (NER) in pursuing higher education. This scheme aims to promote education among economically weaker students from the eight northeastern states of India—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—by providing them with financial assistance.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be permanent residents of the North Eastern Region and have completed their Class 12 education from a recognized board within the region. They must have secured admission in a general degree, technical, or professional course at a recognized university, college, or institution within India. The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed ₹4.5 lakh. Students pursuing courses through open universities or distance learning are not eligible for this scheme.

Under this scholarship, selected students receive ₹5,400 per month for general degree courses and ₹7,800 per month for technical or professional courses to cover tuition fees, books, and other academic expenses. The amount is directly transferred to the student’s bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and timely disbursement.

Students can apply for the NER UGC Scholarship through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) (scholarships.gov.in) by registering online, filling out the application form, and submitting required documents such as Aadhaar card, income certificate, domicile certificate, admission proof, and bank account details.

This scholarship has played a crucial role in increasing the gross enrollment ratio (GER) in higher education among students from the Northeast, empowering them with better academic and career opportunities. By reducing financial barriers, the NER UGC Scholarship contributes to the socio-economic development of the region and encourages students to pursue their educational aspirations.
